Funding: 61 231 434 CZK
About the project:
The Czech-Norwegian project CO2-SPICER, focusing on preparation of the first pilot geological storage site in the Czech Republic, has successfully finished the first year of implementation. In the beginning, the focus was on collation of all accessible input data, their verification and consolidation. This step was followed by construction of a 3D geological model of the storage complex – the main activity of this project phase. Moreover, a detailed study of geomechanical and geochemical properties of rocks building the reservoir and its overburden has been started, as well as testing of usability of various methods for long-term monitoring of the stored CO2.

2022
The main achievement of this project phase is the finalisation of the 3D geological model of the storage complex. This has enabled the start of subsequent dynamic modelling and CO2 injection simulations. Also, the study of the geomechanical and geochemical properties of the rocks forming the repository and its overburden seals continued with detailed risk analysis as well as testing of monitoring methods for long-term monitoring of the stored CO2.
2023
Most of the assessment of geomechanical and geochemical properties of rocks building the reservoir and its overburden have been accomplished. Comprehensive risk analysis was made using all required regional input data. Efficiency of monitoring methods was evaluated for long term supervision of the stored CO2. Seismological data were collected and preparation of site monitoring plan commenced. Scenarios of further storage site development have been compiled.
Summary
The project completed the preparation of the first pilot geological storage site in the Czech Republic. As the first step, all necessary input data were compiled, verified and consolidated. Based on them a 3D geological model of the storage complex was built and verified. Parallel to modelling, geomechanical and geochemical properties of rocks building the reservoir and its overburden have been analysed. The results were used as an input to the dynamic reservoir modelling of fluid flow in the storage complex. First, the oil, water and gas production history was matched by optimisation of the reservoir rock properties distribution and then, the CO2 injection was simulated in a predictive way. Comprehensive risk analysis was made using all required regional input data. Base line monitoring of the storage complex was carried out using different methods including soil gas and ground water geochemistry and seismology to map the pre-storage situation. Applicability of various long-term monitoring methods of the CO2 storage has been evaluated and an extensive data set has been put together. The final site monitoring plan was prepared. Scenarios of further storage site development have been formulated.
